In a reciprocating engine, the cylinder is the space where the piston moves. Thin metal liners or surface coatings form the inner surfaces of the cylinders applied to the engine block. Several metal piston rings, also provide a seal for compression and lubricating oil mount within each cylinder of the pistons. The piston rings don’t actually touch the cylinder walls but ride on a thin layer of lubricating oil.
